About Great Start

Transitioning into college can be difficult, especially for students who will be commuting to campus each day. From setting new daily routines and navigating life in South Florida to getting involved on campus and making friendships, first-year and transfer commuter students face unique challenges as they start their college career.

Designed with the specific needs of commuter students in mind, Great Start helps you prepare for a smooth start to your time at the University of Miami and to be successful throughout your college experience.

Great Start gives you the opportunity to meet fellow new commuters, hear from current commuters about their experience, learn how to navigate campus, and get connected to campus resources--all while in small groups led by experienced student counselors. Taking place before the ’Cane Kickoff orientation program, Great Start gives incoming commuter students a preview of daily life on campus and how to make the most of their time as a Miami Hurricane.

Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, Great Start for the Spring 2021 Semester will be offered remotely via live and pre-recorded video presentations. Registration for the January Great Start 2021 is free.

“Great Start really helped me see another perspective of the college life. It helped me realize that I could experience all the benefits of a ‘typical’ college life without feeling left out simply because I would be a commuter.” –Great Start 2018 Participant
