Pre-Orientation Programs

New students beginning in the Fall semester have the opportunity to participate in four optional programs prior to ’Cane Kickoff. 

Sponsored by the Department of Orientation & Commuter Student Involvement, Great Start is designed for new first-year students from Miami-Dade and Broward counties that will be commuting to campus from home their first year. Great Start is a student-led, overnight pre-orientation program designed to facilitate a successful transition to college for commuter students by orienting them to the campus and its resources, challenging them to explore academic and co-curricular opportunities, and helping them build community amongst other commuters.  

Incoming first-year and transfer International Students are asked to participate in International Student Orientation (ISO) sponsored by the Department of International Student and Scholar Services for new University of Miami international first-year and transfer students.

Horizons is a pre-orientation program designed to assist new African, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students in their transition to the University of Miami.  It is sponsored by the Department of Multicultural Student Affairs

UM Hillel sponsors FreshmanFest, a pre-orientation program designed to introducing new incoming first-year Jewish students to Miami, Hillel, and the Jewish community in South Florida.
